Incheon Office of Education Requests Ministry of Education to Increase 'Teacher Allowance'... Remote Area Allowance Raised from 60,000 KRW to 200,000 KRW
Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 21st that it has submitted the '2025 National Public Officials Allowance Adjustment Request' to the Ministry of Education to improve teachers' working conditions.
The request includes a demand to increase the island and remote area allowance paid monthly to teachers working in the West Sea Five Islands from the current 60,000 KRW to 200,000 KRW. Teachers in the West Sea Five Islands, classified as national public officials, receive much lower allowances than local public officials (200,000 KRW) even when working on the same island.
The Office of Education also proposed adjusting the teaching allowance from 250,000 KRW to 350,000 KRW and the extracurricular teacher allowance from around 20,000 to 30,000 KRW to 100,000 KRW.
This request aims to amend the 'Regulations on Public Officials' Allowances, etc.' The Ministry of Education will receive requests from each metropolitan and provincial office of education, review them, and then submit them to the Ministry of Personnel Management. The decision on allowance increases will be made after consultations between the Ministry of Personnel Management and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Previously, the Incheon Office of Education collected opinions from staff across 107 institutions, gathering 131 proposals. Subsequently, after discussions with the Incheon Teachers' Association Federation, the Incheon branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union, and the Incheon Teachers' Labor Union, the demand proposal was finalized.
