Gyeonggi-do to Provide 'Survival Swimming' Education for Elementary Students This Year... 74 Schools, 25,000 Students
Gyeonggi Province will start survival swimming education for about 25,000 elementary school students from 74 schools in 12 cities and counties this year. The education will be conducted at the Gyeonggi Marine Safety Experience Center, beginning on the 18th of this month and continuing weekly until the end of the year.
According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education's Student Survival Swimming Education Support Ordinance, third-grade elementary students must receive 10 sessions and fourth-grade students 6 sessions of survival swimming education annually. Gyeonggi Province finalized the education participants through pre-registration via the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education at the end of last year.
The swimming education includes basic survival swimming lessons such as how to wear a life jacket, safe entry into water, basic kicking techniques, and maintaining body temperature, as well as escaping from ships and surviving rip currents.
Last year, 22,240 students from 63 elementary schools in 15 cities and counties, including Mangpo Elementary School in Suwon City, participated in the survival swimming education.
Kim Bong-hyun, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Division of Gyeonggi Province, explained, "The Marine Safety Experience Center offers not only survival swimming education but also various experiences and training on preventing marine accidents and marine safety incidents."
