On the 14th (local time), major foreign media including AFP reported that Judge James Meller of the High Court in London ruled that Wright is not 'Satoshi Nakamoto,' the creator of Bitcoin. Judge Meller stated, "Dr. Wright is not the author of the Bitcoin white paper, nor was he the person who adopted or operated under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto between 2008 and 2011," adding, "Dr. Wright did not create the Bitcoin system and did not write the initial version of the Bitcoin software." While promising to disclose detailed reasons for this decision later, Judge Meller emphasized that there is "definite evidence."
Previously, since 2016, Wright claimed that he was the author who wrote the Bitcoin white paper in 2008 under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. However, the cryptocurrency industry responded negatively to Wright’s sudden claim. This court decision came after the nonprofit organization in the tech industry, the Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), filed a lawsuit to block or defend against Wright’s claims in order to protect the open-source nature of cryptocurrency.
COPA requested the court to confirm that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, arguing that Wright’s false claims, including document forgery, are hindering open-source technology development. Wright, who appeared early in the five-week trial, denied COPA’s allegations. This ruling is also expected to impact the outcome of lawsuits Wright filed against developers, claiming infringement of his intellectual property rights. COPA expressed joy over the ruling, stating, "Dr. Wright and his supporters have lied for over eight years, harassing and threatening developers in the cryptocurrency industry, but Wright’s claims have ended with today’s court ruling."
