Ahead of Elections, EU Requests Deepfake Response Information from TikTok and X
The European Union (EU) has officially requested related information to identify preventive measures against deepfakes (AI-generated manipulated content) on major online platforms.
According to AFP on the 14th (local time), the EU Commission requested related information from online platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Google, YouTube, Snapchat, and Bing. All of these are subject to special supervision under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA).
The DSA is a new law implemented since August last year to prevent the distribution of false information or illegal and harmful content on social networking service (SNS) platforms like X and TikTok. More than 20 major online platforms may face fines of up to 6% of their annual global revenue if they fail to take immediate corrective actions such as removing harmful content.
Currently, the EU is officially investigating X and TikTok for potential violations of the DSA. AFP mentioned that this request for information related to deepfakes is connected to the upcoming European Parliament elections in June. It is analyzed that the EU has started a pre-check due to concerns about the impact of AI-generated fake images and audio on the elections.
