No More Semi-basement Tragedies... Geumcheon-gu Provides Free Flood Insurance Premiums and Flood Prevention Facilities Support
Full Flood and Windstorm Insurance Premium Support for Flood-Prone Semi-Basement Units
Free Installation of Backflow Prevention Devices and Flood Barriers
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it will fully support flood and wind disaster insurance premiums for semi-basement houses in flood-prone areas and install flood prevention facilities free of charge in houses and commercial buildings to make every effort to prevent flood and wind disasters.
This initiative is aimed at protecting residents' property and precious lives, targeting semi-basement houses and underground shopping areas vulnerable to heavy summer rains.
Flood and wind disaster insurance compensates for physical damage directly caused by typhoons, heavy rain, floods, earthquakes, and other flood and wind disasters.
It plans to fully cover the insurance premium co-payments for economically vulnerable groups (basic livelihood security recipients, near-poverty groups) and semi-basement households at high risk of flooding. This is to provide practical support to residents who hesitate to subscribe to flood and wind disaster insurance due to financial burdens.
Anyone who owns or rents a house (including movable property), small business owners (shops and factories), or residents living in apartment buildings up to 15 floors can subscribe to the flood and wind disaster insurance. Applications can be made by visiting the local community service center or by contacting one of the seven insurance companies (DB Insurance, Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, KB Insurance, NH Insurance, Hanwha General Insurance, Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance).
Flood prevention facility installation is also provided free of charge for apartment complexes, detached houses, and commercial buildings at risk of flooding. By supporting backflow prevention devices and water barriers, it can prevent property damage such as flooding caused by rainwater inflow and sewage backflow into buildings.
Households or businesses wishing to install these facilities can inquire at their local community service center or the Water Management Division of Geumcheon-gu Office. A responsible official will visit the site to assess the necessity and quantity before proceeding with the construction.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “As heavy summer rains have become frequent recently, causing unfortunate damages, we have decided to expand support for flood and wind disaster prevention,” adding, “We will do our best to thoroughly prepare for flood and wind disasters to ensure that not a single life is lost.”
