Hwaseong Maehyang-ri Peace Memorial Hall MI Wins German iF Design Award
Shaping Life Moving Toward the Future with Heartbeat Waves
Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun: "Maehyang-ri History Will Be a Compass for the Future"
The MI (Museum Identity·photo) of the 'Maehyangri Peace Memorial Hall' in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, which is set to open this August, won the grand prize in the Communication and Public Branding category at the German 'iF Design Award 2024.'
The 'iF Design Award' is an international design competition hosted by the International Forum in Germany since 1953 and is considered one of the world's top three design awards.
The Maehyangri Peace Memorial Hall is an architectural work designed by the world-renowned architect Mario Botta, which has attracted much attention. The memorial hall's MI visually reinterprets the invisible violence of noise that occurred at the former U.S. Air Force shooting range and the suffering of the residents, symbolizing it as the wave of a heartbeat representing life moving from the present to the future.
Additionally, the city explained that the MI was designed to harmonize with the architectural vocabulary of the memorial hall and its structures by ambiguously expressing ▲Maehyangri (매향리) ▲Museum (박물관) ▲Memorial (기념비). In particular, the city added that the 'M' wave form was designed to be continuously connected and expanded to convey various tones and contexts.
The city plans to actively utilize the MI in the memorial hall's spatial design, monuments, and promotional materials so that citizens can naturally engage with the vision and values of the memorial hall.
