5·18 Group "Candidate Do Tae-woo Who Distorts and Belittles History Must Be Expelled"
Gwangju May Organizations stated that the People Power Party’s general election candidate Do Tae-woo, who distorted and belittled the May 18 Democratic Movement, should be expelled.
The May Mothers’ House (May Eomeoni Jip) said in a statement on the 12th, "Lawyer Do Tae-woo is someone who should be punished under the May 18 History Distortion Punishment Act, not a person who should represent the people in the National Assembly."
The organization added, "The May 18 Democratic Movement victims have already been recognized as national merit recipients, and the legal and historical evaluations have been completed. The May 18 History Distortion Punishment Act is a national consensus that prohibits distortion and belittlement for personal gain by denying the nationally finalized evaluation," emphasizing, "Those who make distorted remarks must sincerely apologize, not with a one-time apology, but by kneeling before the spirits at the May 18 Democratic Cemetery."
Earlier, the public law organization May 18 Democratic Movement Bereaved Families Association also issued a statement on the 11th, saying, "Candidate Do claimed the theory of North Korean involvement in the May 18 movement on his YouTube broadcast," and pointed out, "Regarding this remark, People Power Party’s Public Official Recommendation Committee Chairman Jeong Young-hwan expressed support, citing the importance of diversity."
