'Investigation Pressure Allegations Against Chae Sang-byeong' Lee Jong-seop, Nominee for Ambassador to Australia, Departs Tonight
The Corruption Investigation Office lifted the travel ban imposed last January
Departure two days after the ban was lifted
Lee Jong-seop, the nominee for Ambassador to Australia (former Minister of National Defense), is scheduled to depart for Australia on the 10th.
The ambassador nominee is expected to board a flight to Brisbane, Australia, through Incheon International Airport that evening.
He was appointed as Ambassador to Australia on the 4th, but it was later revealed that a travel ban had been imposed on him due to an investigation by the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Division (PCC) related to allegations of external pressure in the investigation of the death of Marine Corporal Chae Mo, sparking controversy.
On the 5th, the day after his appointment, the ambassador nominee filed an objection with the Ministry of Justice requesting the lifting of the travel ban, and on the 8th, the Ministry of Justice held a travel ban review committee meeting and lifted the travel ban against him.
The PCC had registered former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop as a suspect in January this year and imposed a travel ban in connection with allegations of external pressure in the investigation of the death of Marine Corporal Chae Mo. Lee, who was nominated as Ambassador to Australia, appeared at the PCC on the 7th as a suspect and was questioned for about four hours before returning home.
The PCC Investigation Division 4 (Chief Prosecutor Lee Dae-hwan) reportedly questioned former Minister Lee about his involvement during the process in which the case, in which former Marine 1st Division Commander Im Seong-geun and others were charged with negligent homicide and transferred to the police, was recalled and re-examined by the Ministry of National Defense prosecution team.
