Suwon, Goyang, Seongnam, and Siheung to Promote 'Bio National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex'
Four local governments in Gyeonggi Province?Suwon, Goyang, Seongnam, and Siheung?have applied to establish a national advanced strategic industry specialized complex in the bio sector promoted by the government.
After conducting a demand survey in August last year, Gyeonggi Province formed a dedicated task force (TF) including experts with these four cities that applied for participation to discuss the direction of the public contest and the preparation of the development plan.
Suwon City plans to develop Dong Suwon (Gwanggyo) and Seo Suwon (Tapdong District) into Organoid Park by leveraging the Gwanggyo Techno Valley, which houses 218 bio companies and bio company research institutes, and collaborating with Sungkyunkwan University, Ajou University, and Ajou University Hospital.
Goyang City, with strengths including the National Cancer Center, six large hospitals, abundant medical personnel, and convenient transportation networks, plans to raise 125.8 billion KRW in funds and create a bio (cancer and organoid) precision medical specialized complex centered on Ilsan Techno Valley.
Seongnam City, leveraging its strengths in research and development (R&D) high-level personnel and infrastructure of bio companies, hospitals, universities, and research institutes, has signed agreements with Cha Biotech, Dmed, Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, and Bundang CHA Hospital to utilize Pangyo 1st and 2nd Techno Valleys, Seongnam High-Tech Valley, and Jeongja-dong Housing Exhibition Site as specialized complexes.
Siheung City, with Seoul National University Siheung Campus located in the Baegot District and Seoul National University Hospital scheduled to open, and its proximity to Incheon enabling metropolitan connectivity, plans to develop Baegot District, Wolgot, and Jeongwang areas into BioTriplex.
This public contest is a project promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to achieve a super-gap technology in the bio sector, proceeding in two fields: biopharmaceutical industry and organoid regenerative medicine industry.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will select the final site in the first half of this year after review and resolution by the National Advanced Strategic Industry Committee.
A Gyeonggi Province official emphasized, "The biohealth industry sector holds the top competitiveness nationwide with 40% of businesses, 38% of workers, and 39% of sales. We are strengthening competitiveness through various projects such as training 1,500 bio personnel annually, creating a startup nurturing environment within the Gyeonggi Bio Center, and establishing domestic and international networks."
