HD Hyundai Marine Solutions announced on the 8th that it recently signed a contract with Greece's Neptune for the supply of 'Engine Part Load Optimization (EPLO) service' for four car carriers.
EPLO is an eco-friendly solution that enhances combustion efficiency by replacing or modifying the turbocharger according to engine output, or by adjusting fuel injection quantity and timing, as well as the fuel-air mixture ratio. It is expected to improve fuel efficiency by up to 6g per kWh and reduce carbon emissions, while suppressing the formation of carbon deposits, thereby extending engine life and reducing maintenance costs.
Previously, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions launched the 'Engine Part Load Optimization Service' in collaboration with Acelleron, a global leader in engine turbochargers. After securing its first order for one car carrier in October last year, the company has received additional orders for four more vessels, marking the business's entry into full-scale operation.
Generally, ship engines are designed to deliver optimal fuel efficiency and performance tailored to the operating speed and environment specified during shipbuilding.
However, more than 60% of ships over 400 GT currently operating worldwide fail to meet the Energy Efficiency Existing Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Index (CII) regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, creating a demand for solutions.
To comply with these regulations, many shipping companies are considering limiting engine output to about 70% of the original power and operating at reduced speeds. Demand for EPLO, which can optimize combustion according to 'engine output restrictions,' is expected to surge explosively.
