The mayor said, "I am proud of Woo Sang-hyeok, who soars high on the world stage wearing the Yongin City logo," adding, "Woo Sang-hyeok, who always shows his efforts in competitions with a smiling face, is delivering hope to Yongin Special City and the people of the Republic of Korea."
The mayor also urged, "I hope that he manages his body well without injury in the remaining competitions and fully demonstrates his abilities at the Paris Olympics in France, which will be held in July."
Woo Sang-hyeok has increased his chances of winning a medal at the Paris Olympics by placing in all four indoor athletics competitions held this year. In February, he finished second by clearing 2.33m at the Hustopece meet in the Czech Republic, followed by a victory with a 2.32m record at the Banska Bystrica meet in Slovakia on the 14th of the same month. On the 21st, he also won consecutively by clearing 2.30m at the Nehvizdy meet in the Czech Republic, and earlier this month, he won the bronze medal by clearing 2.28m at the 2024 World Indoor Athletics Championships held at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland.
The mayor also encouraged Choi Jin-woo, a men's high jump athlete who visited with Woo Sang-hyeok that day. Choi Jin-woo joined the Yongin City Hall workplace sports team after graduating from Ulsan Sports Science High School this year. Choi is a promising athlete who won the men's high jump at the 2022 Asian Youth Championships by clearing 2.21m. He is preparing to participate in the World Junior Championships to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in April.
