On the 6th (local time), Haverford College announced that Chairman Byungju Kim will lead the Board of Managers as Chair starting from July.
Founded in 1833, Haverford College is a prestigious private liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, Eastern United States, known for its emphasis on humanities, social sciences, basic sciences, and engineering. It is considered one of the "Little Ivy League" colleges alongside Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, and Wesleyan universities.
While Korean Americans have served as board members at American universities, Chairman Kim is the first Korean American to be appointed as the chair of the board at a prestigious university.
The Haverford College Board of Managers is the organization that establishes key regulations for university governance, research areas, and management of university resources. It consists of 30 board members, including the Chair of the Board and the college president. Byungju Kim served as a board member from 2005 to 2017.
Wendy E. Raymond, President of Haverford College, said, "Byungju Kim, who has already demonstrated leadership through his roles on boards of various institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, taking on the role of Chair of the Haverford Board of Managers means a lot. His passion for pure scholarship, ethical leadership, and the stature of Haverford as a higher education institution naturally led him to become the leader of Haverford College. We are very much looking forward to our next journey with Chairman Byungju Kim."
Chairman Byungju Kim expressed, "I look forward to returning to the board and working with President Wendy Raymond and the leaders of Haverford College. I intend to focus on the core mission of pursuing academic excellence as well as fostering a unique, value-centered community at Haverford based on a stable financial foundation."
