View original imageThe meeting was arranged to introduce Pohang City's industrial base, designated as a national advanced strategic industry secondary battery specialized complex, and to strongly advocate for attracting the ‘Battery Reuse and Recycling Industry Global Innovation Special Zone’.
Mayor Lee emphasized that Pohang hosts globally competitive battery companies such as Ecopro and POSCO Future M, and has secured the optimal foundation to be selected as a secondary battery specialized complex.
He also explained that through the designation of the global innovation special zone, Pohang is the optimal location to lead regional balanced development and contribute to national economic growth while advancing as a leading city for ‘K-Battery’.
In particular, Mayor Lee stressed plans to expand the special zone to a metropolitan scale and build it as an innovation cluster involving not only local companies but also secondary battery companies nationwide.
Furthermore, he stated that by advancing the battery regulatory free special zone, which has produced the highest and largest achievements among 32 special zones nationwide, they will create a business environment that can proactively respond to the stabilization of the secondary battery global supply chain and the issue of mineral resource weaponization.
Alongside this, Mayor Lee additionally proposed projects to foster ventures and startups and revitalize the local economy, including ▲ the establishment of a global industry-academia cooperation center (P-ACE Maker Ground), ▲ the construction of a public-private cooperation advanced manufacturing incubating center, and ▲ the development of a public parking lot at Pohang traditional markets, urging the government for active support.

Mayor Lee said, “With the designation of the global innovation special zone, we will create an ecosystem where battery innovation companies can expand overseas without obstacles,” adding, “We will proactively discover new growth promising industries such as secondary batteries, hydrogen, bio, and digital, and make every effort to secure related national funding.”
