LG Guggenheim Award Winner is Net Art Pioneer 'Shuriching'
Various Creative Works Utilizing New Technologies
LG announced on the 5th that it has selected Shu Lea Cheang, a Taiwanese-born American artist, as the recipient of this year's 'LG Guggenheim Award.'
The LG Guggenheim Award is established by LG in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum in the United States, which has led the global art world, to discover and support artists engaged in innovative art activities based on technology. The awardee receives a prize of $100,000 and a trophy.
This year marks the second edition of the award, and the recipient is artist Shu Lea Cheang. Born in 1954, she has been active mainly in the United States and Europe since earning a master's degree in film studies from New York University in 1979. Her work is characterized by crossing the boundaries of genres such as digital art, installation art, and filmmaking.
For over 30 years, Shu Lea Cheang has continued various artistic experiments using new technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and coding. In particular, she is recognized for leaving a significant mark in the field of 'net art,' a contemporary art genre utilizing the internet during the early days of internet technology in the 1990s.
The international jury of the LG Guggenheim Award, selected by the Guggenheim Museum, chose Shu Lea Cheang after a four-month evaluation of works submitted by artists recommended from around the world. The jury stated, "Shu Lea Cheang has presented a new direction for storytelling in the digital age by engaging in experimental art using various technologies without being confined to a specific form," and added, "We pay tribute to her relentless challenges and passion."
Shu Lea Cheang said, "The 'LG Guggenheim Award,' which supports the convergence of art and technology, holds great significance in the contemporary art world," and expressed, "Receiving this honorable award has given me great confidence to continue developing my artistic world."
