Foreign National Mocking Police on SNS, Involved in Fare Evasion and Drunken Disturbance... Facing Possible Arrest
A foreign national in his 40s who posted a video mocking the police on social networking services (SNS) while staying in South Korea is at risk of being detained.
On the 4th, the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul announced that they have applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A (43), a South African national, on charges including public intoxication disturbance, insult, obstruction of business, and fraud under the Minor Offenses Act. The pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant hearing) for Mr. A was held at 10:30 a.m. on the same day at the Seoul Western District Court.
According to the police, Mr. A, who entered the country as a conversation instructor, is accused of causing a disturbance and insulting police officers at a police substation in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, from the 16th of last month to the 2nd of this month.
On the 27th of last month, Mr. A also filmed a police officer’s face during an altercation and posted the video on SNS. The video showed Mr. A repeatedly making sounds like "niye niye" while mocking the police officer who was demanding that he leave the police substation.
Additionally, Mr. A was arrested on the spot by the police on charges of eating and drinking worth approximately 96,000 won at a restaurant in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, over two occasions from the 1st of this month, and then leaving without paying.
Furthermore, it has been confirmed that a total of 18 emergency calls (112) have been made recently regarding Mr. A, including charges of obstructing a taxi driver's work.

A police official stated, "Considering the habitual nature of the offenses, we plan to respond strictly, including applying for an arrest warrant."
