Proposal at Central Regional Cooperation Meeting
Response: "We Will Actively Consider It"
Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, strongly proposed to President Yoon Suk-yeol that a research-oriented medical school at POSTECH is absolutely necessary.
Governor Lee attended the Central-Local Cooperation Meeting on the 27th and said, "If POSCO builds a hospital, there is no need for government budget support, so there is also hope to establish a research-oriented medical school in Pohang."
Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo proposed campaign promises for the Gyeongbuk region to President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol on March 18, 2022.

Governor Lee then strongly requested the establishment of a POSTECH research-oriented medical school to Lee Kwan-seop, Chief of the Presidential Secretariat, Sung Tae-yoon, Director of the Policy Office, and Lee Ju-ho, Minister of Education, receiving responses that they would actively review it.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo also directly contacted Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang, Kim Sung-geun, President of POSTECH, and Jang In-hwa, the designated Chairman of POSCO Holdings, asking them to thoroughly prepare in advance for the establishment of the POSTECH medical school.
On the same day, Governor Lee also strongly proposed the establishment of a public medical school, but Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong replied that it would be difficult to consider it this time and that it would be actively reviewed next time.
Last February, Gyeongbuk Province held a meeting with Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho at POSTECH to actively explain the necessity of establishing a POSTECH research-oriented medical school.
In particular, Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, and POSTECH have solid bio infrastructure, strong ties with the local medical community, and meet the requirements to solve the issue of national balanced development, making it a region prepared for training physician-scientists.
