Disney's Sean Bailey, Who Was in Charge of The Little Mermaid Live-Action, Resigns Amid Investor Pressure
WSJ "Replaced Under Pressure from Activist Investors"
NYT "Criticized for Moves Supporting Diversity"
Sean Bailey, president of Disney Studio Motion Pictures who has been in charge of producing Disney's live-action adaptations, is stepping down. Although he was praised for leading the organization steadily amid Disney's turmoil, analysts suggest that he was replaced due to pressure from activist investors following the box office underperformance of live-action films such as The Little Mermaid.
On the 26th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Bailey, who had overseen Disney's live-action film production since 2010, is stepping down, and his position will be succeeded by David Greenbaum, president of Searchlight Pictures. Going forward, Greenbaum will serve as president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, taking on live-action adaptations of classic animations.
Bailey is regarded as a figure who led the company relatively steadily during a chaotic period when Disney underwent intense restructuring and organizational changes. Notably, the live-action adaptations he spearheaded?Aladdin, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast?each succeeded at the box office, earning over $1 billion.
However, media analysis suggests that he ultimately resigned due to pressure from activist investors. Disney has been engaged in ongoing disputes with activist investor Nelson Peltz, who repeatedly criticized Disney's board for poor performance. WSJ reported, "Activist investors have urged Disney to improve margins in its streaming division and to review the studio's creative processes to enhance output."
Above all, The New York Times (NYT) analyzed that the underperformance of live-action films like The Little Mermaid and Mulan, as well as Bailey’s proactive support for diversity, likely influenced the leadership change. Bailey cast Latinx actress Rachel Zegler as Snow White in the live-action Snow White film and cast Black actress Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid, which drew harsh criticism from original fans.
