Elderly Residents of Gangnam-gu Learn Exercise from Physical Education Instructors at Senior Centers
Selected 6 Senior Centers in Partnership with Gangnam Senior Welfare Center, Experts Teach Bodyweight Strength Exercises and Monitor Blood Sugar Changes Before and After Exercise
Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will expand the operation of the "Our Neighborhood Health Coach" program this year, allowing senior citizens to exercise with professional sports instructors at nearby senior centers.
With the advent of the 100-year lifespan era, interest in health management and exercise for a healthy old age is steadily increasing. The Health Promotion Support Office at the Public Health Center, which plays a key role as exercise coaches for residents, identified this demand among seniors and piloted the Our Neighborhood Health Coach program last year at three senior centers, targeting about 150 participants. As a result, satisfaction was high, and this time, in partnership with the Gangnam Senior Welfare Center, the number of participating facilities will be expanded to six, with a total of 24 sessions planned?four sessions per institution.
The Welfare Center selects senior facilities such as senior centers for exercise participation, and the Public Health Center dispatches exercise experts to those locations. The experts teach proper strength training methods using bodyweight exercises and simple small equipment. Additionally, simple blood sugar tests are conducted before and after exercise so participants can visually confirm the blood sugar reduction effects from physical activity.
To encourage continued exercise after the sessions, the Public Health Center provides its self-developed exercise program, "Healthy Life 24 Cuts," along with exercise equipment. Healthy Life 24 Cuts is a program developed by the Public Health Center that includes 24 bodyweight strength exercises that can be easily followed anytime and anywhere without special equipment, and exercises are divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels according to fitness level.
