Chinese BYD Beats Tesla, Now Launches 300 Million KRW Supercar
Chinese automaker BYD, which surpassed Tesla to set the world's largest electric vehicle sales record, has now introduced a high-performance electric supercar priced over 300 million KRW, competing against Ferrari and Lamborghini.
According to Bloomberg on the 26th, BYD unveiled the 'Yangwang U9' at a live event held in Shanghai, China, the previous day. This high-performance supercar can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds and reach a top speed of 309.19 km/h. The price is 1.68 million yuan (approximately 233,450 USD), which is about 310 million KRW.
BYD plans to first sell the Yangwang U9 in the Chinese market. The report noted that BYD, well known for selling mid-to-low priced electric vehicles, is betting on the more profitable premium electric vehicle market through its 'Yangwang' and 'Fangchengbao' brands, with these vehicles expected to compete against Ferrari, Lamborghini, and others. Last year, BYD launched the premium sports utility vehicle Yangwang U8 priced around 1.1 million yuan and has delivered 3,653 units as of the end of January.
Other high-priced electric vehicles under the Yangwang brand will also be unveiled in the Chinese market by the end of this year. The list of upcoming releases reportedly includes a premium sedan priced around 1 million yuan, the media added.
