Kakao announced on the 21st that it has obtained the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), a global recycling certification, from the eco-friendly certification body Control Union.
The GRS certification is an international eco-friendly recycling standard certification granted to products containing more than 20% recycled materials and whose usage history can be tracked. In addition to the content of raw materials, it is known as a certification that checks compliance with social, environmental, and chemical standards. It is regarded as the most trusted eco-friendly certification required by global consumer goods companies. Upon obtaining the certification, the GRS certification mark can be displayed on final products that meet the relevant standards.
Based on this certification, Kakao plans to actively use recycled materials in products developed in-house by Kakao Makers and Kakao Friends. Kakao Makers promotes the value of the circular economy through an eco-friendly activity called "Saegabeorchi," which collects unusable products and processes them into new products. The Saegabeorchi project has been carried out seven times so far, with over 51,000 users participating and approximately 690,000 kg (69 tons) of about 4 million products being upcycled. This year, the project will continue to expand its public value through resource circulation, and recycled products that meet the GRS certification will be developed.
Kakao Friends also plans to introduce dolls using recycled polyester filling materials this year. In particular, they will conduct close collaboration with partners such as raw material producers and manufacturers throughout the product development and production process, considering eco-friendliness.
