Gangnam-gu Allocates 31.5 Billion KRW for Education Expenses to Foster Future Talent
Supporting 22 Projects in 5 Areas with the Largest Autonomous District Budget... Collaboration with Schools and Private Institutions Including Open Schools, Makerspaces, and Children's Seodang
Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) has secured the largest education expense budget among autonomous districts this year, allocating a total of 31.5 billion KRW. Through this, it supports 22 projects across 5 fields aimed at nurturing future talents with creativity and character.
By project area, the budget is allocated as follows: ▲ Support for improving safe and healthy educational environments (6.7 billion KRW) ▲ Customized educational support to reduce educational gaps and revitalize public education (6.9 billion KRW) ▲ Operation of 4th Industrial Revolution programs and infrastructure establishment (3.5 billion KRW) ▲ Support for Gangnam-type future talent development (1 billion KRW) ▲ Educational welfare projects such as free school meals and entrance preparation funds (13.4 billion KRW).
Establishing cooperation models with schools and private sectors such as Open Schools, Makerspaces, and Children's Seodang
The district plans to expand cooperation projects with schools by providing tailored support to each school with this budget, thereby establishing a local government cooperation model based on this. First, it plans to expand the number of participating schools in the Open School project, which was introduced for the first time last year. Open Schools open school playgrounds on weekends and weekday evenings for local residents to walk, jog, and exercise, providing participating schools with customized support such as facilities and personnel needed for opening.
The district will discover idle school spaces and newly install Makerspaces?facilities where students can receive education in coding, robotics, drones, and other 4th Industrial Revolution subjects?at two schools this year, operating a total of 32 locations. Going forward, it plans to install community convenience facilities that students and residents can use together by utilizing school facilities and operate local open programs.
Beyond cooperation with schools, the district will promote specialized projects to discover educational content through collaboration with private institutions. The Children's Seodang, which opened during last year’s vacation period and received great response, will be expanded this year to schools, libraries, and neighborhood community centers.
Additionally, it will actively utilize Gangnam’s excellent infrastructure such as venture companies in Yeoksam-dong’s startup street and institutions operating programs in the beauty and cosmetology fields to develop new career experience programs. It will also promote a neighborhood creative convergence art school linked with art museums, galleries, and beautiful architectural structures.
Gangnam Future Education Center plans and produces its own programs such as digital education visiting schools
In addition to education expenses, the district will invest 6 billion KRW of its own funds to promote independent projects. Unlike support for school expenses, this project plans and produces high-quality educational programs independently to support their use in school curricula. As a hub institution for 4th Industrial Revolution education, the Gangnam Future Education Center will expand experiential content and support programs and instructors that allow students to experience and practice digital future technologies through the ‘Creative Talent Development Specialized Program Visiting Schools’ at 58 elementary and middle schools. It will also operate ‘Local Exploration Schools’ that explore cultural and educational facilities such as the Gangnam Future Education Center, resource recovery facilities, museums, and art galleries in connection with the curriculum.
