'Pregnant Women-Only Call Taxi' First Introduced in 2020 Among Special and Metropolitan Cities Nationwide

Busan City will increase the support limit for pregnant women’s call taxis starting March 1.
The support amount will be raised from 20,000 KRW per month to 40,000 KRW per month, and the usage limit will be adjusted from the existing 4 times per month to unlimited.
Mama Call is a dedicated call taxi service for pregnant women introduced by Busan City in 2020, the first among special and metropolitan cities nationwide, to respond to the declining birth rate and provide mobility convenience for hospital visits and other needs.
Pregnant women registered as residents in the city can use Mama Call from the time of pregnancy confirmation until one year after childbirth by obtaining a pregnancy confirmation certificate. It is available at a much cheaper fare than regular taxis, receiving great support from pregnant women.
The criteria for pregnant women refer to women who are pregnant or within one year postpartum (according to Article 65, Paragraph 1 of the Labor Standards Act). The fare is 1,800 KRW for the first 5 km, then 100 KRW per 422 meters, and 100 KRW per 102 seconds.
By registering pregnancy or childbirth proof documents on the dedicated Mama Call app and completing review and approval, membership registration is completed, allowing convenient use of Mama Call services such as vehicle calls through the app.
The city plans to flexibly respond to the low birthrate crisis by increasing the Mama Call support budget this year and has completed consultations on related legal amendments to expand support for Mama Call starting this March.
The city and the city council have allocated 1.4 billion KRW for the Mama Call support budget this year, which is an increase of 400 million KRW compared to last year’s original budget.
Additionally, consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare on social security system changes were completed at the end of January.
The Mama Call project is commissioned and operated by the Busan Facilities Corporation. For operational efficiency, the corporation decided to integrate the call center phone numbers, which were previously divided into special transportation Duribal, voucher call taxis for the disabled, and voucher call taxis for pregnant women (Mama Call), into a single representative number.
Jung Im-su, Director of the City Transportation Bureau, stated, “We will continue to strive to provide better services to improve mobility convenience for transportation-vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and the disabled.”
