Grand Opening of Election Office Draws Over 2,000 Attendees
Standing Election Committee Chair Moon Sang-pil Calls for Victory and Support
Jeong Junho, the Democratic Party preliminary candidate for Buk-gu (Gap), Gwangju Metropolitan City, held an opening ceremony for his election office, raising the anchor for victory in the general election.
The opening ceremony, held on the first floor of the election office at the Mudeung Library intersection, was attended by about 2,000 people including standing election committee chairman Moon Sangpil, sponsorship chairman Lee Jongbeom, guests, party members, and residents celebrating the event.
Preliminary candidate Jeong Junho said, “Buk-gu, Gwangju was a leading region that introduced the resident participation system for the first time in the country, but over the past 20 years, the population of Buk-gu has been declining and regional development has stagnated,” adding, “I will change the map of Buk-gu to restore the former glory of Buk-gu and rebuild pride.”
He continued, “Stagnant politics that take no responsibility have blocked Buk-gu’s opportunity to leap forward,” emphasizing, “Together with preliminary candidate Moon Sangpil, who serves as the standing election committee chairman, I will devote myself fully to becoming the candidate for Buk-gu Gap, laying the cornerstone for regime change through victory in the general election, and solving the challenges of Buk-gu, the Democratic Party, and the Republic of Korea.”
Moon Sangpil, who competed in good faith with preliminary candidate Jeong Junho, took on the role of standing election committee chairman for Jeong Junho’s campaign and appealed for support for Jeong.
Standing election committee chairman Moon said, “We must change the shameless politics that do not take responsibility even after losing power and only engage in publicity without doing anything for the region,” encouraging, “Let’s change the 20-year hegemonic and incompetent politics of the region together with preliminary candidate Jeong Junho.”
At the opening ceremony, Moon Sangpil and preliminary candidate Jeong Junho embraced as they pledged their determination for victory in the general election. When Jeong, expressing gratitude for Moon’s decision to declare support for the greater cause of replacing the incumbent, carried Moon on his back and walked around the stage, supporters responded with enthusiastic applause.
Lee Jongbeom, the first director of the Korean Studies Honam Promotion Institute and honorary professor at Chosun University, described preliminary candidate Jeong as “a young leader who will present a new vision for the pressing issues of social polarization and climate crisis and turn the despair of youth into hope,” urging, “Please create a society where the elderly are comfortable, the young have hope, and there is mutual trust.”
In addition, many former and current lawmakers and political figures, including former Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission chairperson Jeon Hyunhee, sent congratulatory messages via video.
After the congratulatory speeches, preliminary candidate Jeong received blue sneakers and a jumper from a young supporter who will vote for the first time in this general election, symbolizing a request to work hard for certain victory. The ceremony concluded with a performance of flying paper airplanes filled with the participants’ wishes for election victory.
