Significant Reduction of Frequently Flooded Farmland
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 18th that it has newly selected 154 districts (96 basic surveys, 58 newly initiated) for drainage improvement projects to prevent crop damage in farmlands that were habitually flooded whenever it rained and to support safe farming.
The drainage improvement project involves installing drainage pumps and sluice gates and maintaining drainage channels in farmlands that are located in low-lying areas or near rivers, where flooding damage frequently occurs. Recently, due to climate change, there have been increasing cases of heavy rainfall in a short period causing damage to crops, highlighting the importance of drainage improvement projects. In particular, last year, damage from extreme heavy rains was significant, leading to a substantial increase in the budget for drainage improvement projects this year (from 370.3 billion KRW to 453.5 billion KRW).
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has newly selected 154 districts suffering from habitual flooding damage, prioritizing areas such as rice and soybean production and regions densely populated with greenhouse facilities, expecting to expand the cultivation base for other crops in rice paddies and improve productivity.
