'Corruption Charges' Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin to Be Paroled Tomorrow... Hospital Detention for 6 Months
Sentence reduced from 8 years to 1 year
Parole condition: 6 months imprisonment, served in hospital
Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (74), who has been serving his sentence in a hospital after being indicted on corruption charges, will be paroled tomorrow.
According to AFP and local media on the 17th, Seta Tawisin announced that Thaksin will be released from hospital confinement and paroled on the 18th. Earlier, on the 13th, the Thai Ministry of Justice announced that Thaksin was included among 930 parole candidates. At that time, Minister of Justice Tawee Setthasat said, "Former Prime Minister Thaksin falls under the category of those with serious health conditions or aged over 70," adding, "He will be automatically released after serving six months."
Thaksin, a telecommunications tycoon who served as prime minister from 2001 to 2006, fled abroad in 2008 after being ousted by a military coup and indicted on corruption charges. Despite the corruption allegations, Thaksin-affiliated parties continued to win elections with the support of farmers and urban poor. Last year, Seta Tawisin of the Pheu Thai Party, led by Thaksin’s youngest daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was elected prime minister. Thaksin returned to Thailand on August 22 last year, ending 15 years of exile.

Upon his return, Thaksin was sentenced to eight years in prison and incarcerated, but was immediately transferred to a hospital due to high blood pressure and other health issues, where he has remained. During this time, his sentence was reduced to one year by royal pardon, making him eligible for parole, which will take place tomorrow. According to Thai correctional law, prisoners who have served more than one-third of their sentence are eligible for parole. However, a minimum of six months must be served, which Thaksin has completed while in the hospital.
