Samhwa Paint Obtains Patent for Manufacturing Electrolyte Additives for Lithium Secondary Batteries
Improving Electrochemical Properties by Reducing Sulfate Concentration
Samwha Paint Industrial Co., Ltd. announced on the 15th that it has obtained a patent for the "Method for Manufacturing Dialkylsulfonyl Isosorbide Compounds, Electrolyte Additives for Lithium Secondary Batteries, Electrolytes for Lithium Secondary Batteries, and Lithium Secondary Batteries."
Samwha Paint invented a new manufacturing method that can produce electrolyte additives for lithium secondary batteries, composed of dialkylsulfonyl isosorbide compounds, in a stable and high-purity manner.

View original imageElectrolyte additives used in lithium secondary batteries cause side reactions and degrade battery performance if impurities such as chloride ions are present. This manufacturing technology is characterized by significantly improving electrochemical properties by reducing the chloride ion concentration in dialkylsulfonyl isosorbide compounds.
In particular, the existing method for manufacturing dialkylsulfonyl isosorbide compounds had drawbacks such as manufacturing risks due to the absence of solvents and long processing times, but this patent resolves these issues.
Dialkylsulfonyl isosorbide is an additive that, when included in non-aqueous electrolytes of lithium secondary batteries, forms a protective film on the electrode surface, enhancing battery safety and preventing performance degradation caused by electrolyte decomposition during charging, thereby extending battery life.
This compound has the advantage of ensuring oxidative stability in voltage ranges above 4.3V due to its structural characteristics.
Samwha Paint, in collaboration with Professor Namsoon Choi's laboratory at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), conducted performance evaluations of dialkylsulfonyl isosorbide through a private commissioned project, revealing that this compound exhibited performance similar to that of VC (Vinylene Carbonate) and FEC (Fluoroethylene Carbonate), substances commonly used as electrolyte additives.
