Clear Weather on Return Trips for Holidays... Cloudy Nationwide on Seol Day
Rain or Snow on Seollal Day in Some Areas
Temperatures Similar to or Slightly Higher Than Average
This Lunar New Year holiday, the first and last two days of the holiday will be clear nationwide, while the weather around the day of Seollal will generally be cloudy. On Seollal day and the following day, rain or snow is expected mainly in the western regions.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 8th, the weather will be mostly clear until the first day of the holiday on the 9th due to the influence of continental high pressure. Morning low temperatures will range from -7 to 2 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs will be between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius, slightly warmer than the average (morning lows -10 to 0 degrees, daytime highs 2 to 9 degrees).
From the 10th to the 12th, morning temperatures nationwide will range from -5 to 3 degrees Celsius, and daytime temperatures from 4 to 12 degrees Celsius, similar to the average (morning lows -8 to 2 degrees, daytime highs 4 to 11 degrees). During the Seollal holiday, Seoul's morning lows and daytime highs are expected to be -3 to 5 degrees on the 9th, -2 to 7 degrees on the 10th, -11 to 5 degrees on the 11th, and 1 to 8 degrees on the 12th.

View original imageOn Saturday, Seollal day, the 10th, the western sky will become cloudy from the afternoon. As a pressure trough approaches over the West Sea, clouds will begin to cover the sky, and from the afternoon of the 10th to the morning of the 11th, rain or snow may fall in southern Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Jeolla regions, and Jeju. If the pressure trough strengthens, the area of precipitation could expand to include Seoul, Gangwon, and Gyeongsang regions. Caution is needed for safety on wet and snowy roads.
With the change in pressure systems mainly affecting the Korean Peninsula, winds will also become strong. In Jeju, the West Sea, and the South Sea, rough seas will cause waves to rise up to 3 meters. Those using ferry services should check in advance for cancellations.
From the afternoon of Sunday the 11th through Monday the 12th, the weather will generally clear up. However, due to the influence of a high-pressure system moving westward near the East China Sea and a low-pressure system north of the Korean Peninsula, strong winds may occur in some central regions.
During the Seollal holiday, temperatures will be similar to or slightly higher than average. However, with some wind, the wind chill temperature may drop below -10 degrees Celsius in some areas. After the holiday, temperatures will gradually rise, with daytime highs exceeding 10 degrees Celsius, bringing warmer weather during the day.
