Gochang-gun Opens Applications for 'Strategic Crop Direct Payment System' to Stabilize Rice Supply

Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do announced on the 7th that it is accepting applications for the 2024 strategic crop direct payment program.

The application deadline is until the 31st of next month for winter crops and until May 31st for summer crops. Applicants can visit the town or township office with the largest farmland area and submit the application form.

The strategic crop direct payment system is a government support program that provides subsidies (direct payments) to farmers who cultivate so-called 'strategic crops' such as beans and rice flour instead of rice in paddy fields. It has been implemented since last year as one of the measures to stabilize rice supply and demand.

Eligible applicants are agricultural management entities and agricultural corporations cultivating strategic crops on farmland used for paddy rice farming, and the payment rates vary depending on the season and crop type.

For winter crops, the payment is 500,000 KRW per hectare; for summer crops, 2,000,000 KRW per hectare for legumes and rice flour, 1,000,000 KRW per hectare for edible corn, and 4,300,000 KRW per hectare for summer forage crops.

Additionally, if wheat or forage crops are cultivated in winter followed by legumes or rice flour in summer, an additional incentive of 1,000,000 KRW per hectare is provided.

Especially this year, to expand participation, the support rate for legumes and rice flour has been increased from 1,000,000 KRW to 2,000,000 KRW per hectare. Legumes (adzuki beans, mung beans, peas, etc.) and edible corn have been added to the summer crop list, and the target farmland for summer forage crops has been expanded.

County Governor Shim Deok-seop said, “We hope the strategic crop direct payments will support farmers who are striving to enhance the public functions of agriculture and rural areas. We will do our best to ensure that all eligible farmers can apply without omission.”
