Dongdaemun-gu to Provide 12 Billion Won in Education Expense Subsidies This Year
Various Support Including Academic Advancement Programs, Creative Arts, and Facility Improvement
Strengthening Support for 'Future Smart Education' and 'Carbon Neutral Education' Aligned with District Development Directions
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) held the Dongdaemun-gu Education Expense Subsidy Deliberation Committee on the 31st of last month and finalized the support plan for the 12 billion KRW education expense subsidy for 2024.
Dongdaemun-gu has increased the education expense subsidy by 2 billion KRW compared to the previous year, maintaining a top-level status among Seoul's autonomous districts, and plans to fully support 27 kindergartens and 49 elementary, middle, and high schools in the region.
To support educational projects needed by schools, the district received applications for desired projects from each school in November last year and confirmed a budget support of 6.54 billion KRW for customized projects such as ▲basic and advanced learning ▲tailored career and college admission guidance ▲arts and physical education specialty training ▲club activity support, as well as projects for nurturing future talents including ▲after-school education for low-income students ▲character development programs ▲future science education ▲ecological education.
Additionally, a budget of 630 million KRW was allocated for educational support projects for special education and management target students to create an educational environment where diverse students can coexist, and 130 million KRW was confirmed to strengthen foundational learning competencies such as language and math literacy, reading comprehension, and logical thinking.
Furthermore, to apply the district’s development direction toward a smart city and carbon-neutral city to education, 1.66 billion KRW will be allocated for future science education and the establishment of a smart learning environment, and 500 million KRW will be provided for carbon neutrality. Support for schools cooperating with the local community will also be significantly strengthened.
The support amounts by sector were decided as follows: ▲academic achievement programs 3.92 billion KRW ▲creative arts field 2.6 billion KRW ▲future smart education field 1.663 billion KRW ▲sustainable future ecological environment education 500 million KRW ▲facility improvement field 1.53 billion KRW ▲approximately 780 million KRW for enhancing creativity of kindergarten students, teaching aids support, and creating a safe educational environment ▲and 1.07 billion KRW for other projects.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We will strive to improve the quality of public education and enhance the educational environment so that children can nurture their dreams and grow up properly,” adding, “We will continue to provide generous support in the education sector to make Dongdaemun-gu a great place to raise children.”

In addition to the 12 billion KRW education expense subsidy, the district has secured a total education budget of 20 billion KRW, including support for eco-friendly school meals, entrance preparation funds for elementary, middle, and high schools, free education for all grades in high schools, operation of future education zones for fostering future competencies, and operation of education support centers, and plans to carry out various projects for educational development in the region.
