These ships are two of the four container ships that HJ Heavy Industries secured orders for in October 2021, marking its re-entry into the commercial shipping market after six years. The following year, HJ Heavy Industries secured orders for two additional sister ships, completing a total contract for six 5,500 TEU-class container ships worth 410 million USD.
Since the contract signing, the company has been fully engaged in the construction process at the Yeongdo Shipyard, and following the first and second ships last year, held the naming ceremony for the subsequent two ships today.
With this, HJ Heavy Industries has successfully completed the construction of four 5,500 TEU-class eco-friendly container ships, reaffirming its competitiveness as a traditional powerhouse in the container ship sector.
A representative from the shipowner side expressed their pleasure regarding the naming ceremony, stating, “We are very pleased to secure modern and efficient state-of-the-art eco-friendly container ships suitable for the company’s global sales network.”
As is known, HJ Heavy Industries has been prominent in the mid-to-large eco-friendly container ship sector ranging from 5,500 TEU to 9,000 TEU, including methanol-ready and dual-fuel (DF) vessels, as well as methanol-powered ships.
The ships named today are also designed as methanol-ready vessels that can switch to carbon-neutral operation using eco-friendly methanol. They feature cutting-edge specifications and environmentally friendly designs that reduce fuel consumption by approximately 40%. They also meet the International Maritime Organization’s eco-friendly ship standards, including EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) Phase 3 and NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) Tier III.
