Tesla recalls 2.2 million vehicles in the US due to "warning light display issue"
Authorities Also Investigating Steering Device Defects
Over 2,000 Complaints Confirmed
Tesla is recalling approximately 2.2 million vehicles in the United States due to an issue where the warning lights inside the vehicle are smaller than the size regulated by law.
On the 2nd (local time), according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla is conducting a large-scale recall to address the problem of the font size of warning lights on the dashboard indicating brakes, parking, and anti-lock braking system (ABS) being smaller than the regulation.
The recall affects 2,193,869 vehicles, including 2012?2023 Model S, 2016?2024 Model X, 2017?2023 Model 3, 2019?2024 Model Y, and the 2024 Cybertruck, covering virtually most Tesla vehicles in the United States.
The authorities warned that the warning lights displayed in small font make it difficult to read important safety information on the dashboard, increasing the risk of collisions. They explained that this issue was discovered during a routine audit last month involving the 2023 Model Y.
Tesla informed the authorities that it had confirmed three consumer complaints related to this issue but was not aware of any collisions, injuries, or fatalities. As a corrective measure, Tesla has begun providing free software updates.
Additionally, NHTSA announced yesterday that it has initiated a preliminary evaluation after receiving reports from owners of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y regarding a 'loss of steering control' issue. The authorities confirmed a total of 2,388 complaints related to this problem and believe it is connected to one accident where the driver failed to complete a right turn at an intersection and collided with another vehicle.
Drivers reporting this issue stated that they were unable to turn the steering wheel or that it required significant effort to do so. The authorities have identified over 50 vehicles that were towed due to this problem. They have also released the part numbers suspected to be related to this issue so that consumers can verify.

Tesla has recently been conducting successive recalls due to defects in vehicle parts or software. In mid-December last year, about 2 million vehicles were recalled over safety concerns with the driving assistance feature 'Autopilot.' Last month, approximately 200,000 vehicles were recalled due to rear camera malfunctions. Earlier last month, about 1.62 million vehicles sold in China from 2014 to 2023 were recalled due to safety issues with driving assistance features and others.
