The Asia-Pacific Women’s Information and Communication Center at Sookmyung Women’s University announced on the 3rd that from the 15th to the 18th of last month, it conducted a capacity-building workshop for a total of 116 faculty and staff members at Souphanouvong University and the National University of Laos.

This workshop is part of the UNESCO UNITWIN project, which Sookmyung Women’s University has been participating in since 2016 to enhance the capabilities of ASEAN women.

Sookmyung Women’s University explained, “As interest in gender equality has recently increased in Laos, the need for related education has emerged at universities, leading to the hosting of this workshop.”

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s ‘2023 Global Gender Gap Report,’ Laos ranked 107th in education and 101st in political empowerment, indicating a significant achievement gap between men and women.

During the workshop, Sookmyung Women’s University provided participants with time to discuss gender discrimination issues within Laotian society. They also held sessions comparing cases from Korea and Laos to identify obstacles hindering gender equality and to discuss what practical support Laotian women need.

Sookmyung Women’s University self-assessed, “There was high participation in activities analyzing how unequal gender discrimination norms change through social awareness and deriving improvement measures. This helped provide sustainable education reflecting gender equality awareness in Laotian higher education institutions.”

Suli Des Kio Bualapes, Vice President of the National University of Laos, said, “The importance of women’s roles is being highlighted not only in Laos but worldwide. We hope this workshop will serve as an important opportunity to promote changes in gender equality awareness at our university.”

Meanwhile, prior to this workshop, Sookmyung Women’s University collaborated with Souphanouvong University to conduct joint digital curriculum classes for 38 students majoring in Computer Engineering and IT Engineering.
