On the 31st, Governor Kim Dong-yeon examined the traffic congestion situation near Gogikyo in Gogi-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin City, and urged, "Please make efforts to ensure that the Dongmakcheon maintenance for flood prevention and the Gogikyo expansion project to alleviate traffic congestion proceed smoothly."
This is the third time Governor Kim has visited Gogikyo. Shortly after his inauguration in July 2022, he visited to resolve conflicts surrounding Gogikyo, and in August, he visited again to assess flood damage.
Gogikyo is a 25-meter-long and 8-meter-wide bridge connecting Daejang-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, and Gogi-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin City, originally constructed by Yongin City in 1986. Since the upper and lower parts of the bridge fall under the administrative jurisdictions of Seongnam City and Yongin City respectively, any reconstruction or expansion of Gogikyo requires agreement between the two local governments.
Yongin City has been pushing for the expansion of Gogikyo due to frequent traffic congestion and complaints caused by river flooding near the bridge, while Seongnam City has demanded measures to disperse the incoming traffic volume, showing differences in opinion.
In response, Gyeonggi Province intervened as a mediator and in September 2022 signed a 'Win-win Business Agreement among Gyeonggi Province, Yongin City, and Seongnam City for Traffic Improvement around Gogikyo,' agreeing to cooperate on expanding infrastructure such as roads around Gogikyo and conducting traffic impact analysis studies.
