Court Sentences Man Who Assaulted with Hair Clipper in Bizarre Incident to 7 Years in Prison
A man in his 20s, known as the so-called 'Barikan Assault Man,' who forcibly cut his girlfriend's hair and committed multiple rapes, was sentenced to a heavy prison term.
The Criminal Division 1 of the Namyangju Branch of Uijeongbu District Court (Presiding Judge Park Ok-hee) sentenced defendant Kim Mo (26), who was detained and indicted on charges including violation of the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes, special intimidation, and confinement, to seven years in prison on the 30th. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 80 hours of sexual violence treatment programs and was banned from employment at institutions related to children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities for five years.
The court stated, "The defendant committed the crime because the victim, his girlfriend, contacted another man," and added, "Considering the motive, circumstances, method, and frequency of the crime, the defendant's criminal responsibility is severe." It further noted, "The victim was unable to resist much due to fear that the defendant might harm her family and pets, and it appears she suffered significant psychological trauma."
Moreover, the court explained the sentencing rationale, saying, "The defendant made incomprehensible claims and was unforgivable," and "Considering that the victim refused to accept the 150 million won deposited in escrow."
Kim committed the crimes from July 7 to 11 last year at an officetel in Guri-si, Gyeonggi Province, where he confined his girlfriend A (21), repeatedly raped and assaulted her, and cut her hair with a barikan. He is also accused of torturous acts such as urinating on A's face, spitting on her, and forcing her to kneel naked. A sent a text message to her parents asking for help while Kim was asleep, and she was rescued by police who responded to the report.

In court, Kim denied most of the charges except for some assault, claiming that A stayed at the officetel voluntarily and that their sexual relations were consensual. However, the court rejected Kim's claims, stating, "The victim's testimony is consistent, distinctive in ways that only someone with experience would know, credible, and there is no motive for false testimony."
