Yoon In-chon Proposes Virtual Taekwondo as Official Olympic Sport to IOC

Yoon In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, met with Ser Miang Ng, Vice President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul on the 30th to discuss ways to continuously utilize the Olympic legacy.
Ng, who visited Korea on the occasion of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games, highly praised the full utilization of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic venues such as the Alpensia Sliding Centre, Gangneung Oval, and Gangneung Ice Arena. He said, "It is very encouraging to continue the Olympic legacy," and proposed, "Let us work together to further expand the base of winter sports." Minister Yoon expressed gratitude, saying, "Thanks to the efforts of the IOC, the organizing committee, and the host city, the event is being successfully conducted."
Vice President Ng is an international sports expert and former yacht athlete. He has served as an IOC member since 1998 and concurrently served as the chairman of the organizing committee for the 2010 Singapore Summer Youth Olympic Games. Showing special affection and interest in Taekwondo, he was appointed honorary chairman of Kukkiwon in 2018. Minister Yoon proposed, "Let us work together to adopt virtual Taekwondo as an official Olympic event." Vice President Ng agreed, saying, "For the Olympics to continue developing, it must keep pace with the changing future generations."

After the meeting, Minister Yoon said, "This year marks the 30th anniversary of Taekwondo being adopted as an Olympic sport," and added, "We will closely cooperate with the IOC and make various efforts to expand the base of Taekwondo."
