Dream Metropolitan Transportation Network to Open
President Yoon Suk-yeol announced on the 25th, "We will make 2024 the inaugural year of the metropolitan area wide express railroad (GTX) era." The plan is to expand the GTX-A, B, and C lines and establish new D, E, and F lines to create a 30-minute commute era in the metropolitan area.
President Yoon made this announcement while attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the GTX-C line held at the multipurpose gymnasium of Uijeongbu City Hall that morning.
The GTX-C line connects 86.46 km from Deokjeong Station in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, passing through Cheongnyangni Station and Samseong Station in Seoul, to Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province. With a maximum speed of 180 km/h, it is about three times faster than the subway, and all 14 stations are being developed as transfer stations where passengers can switch to regular subway lines.
President Yoon explained, "When the GTX-C line opens in 2028, it will take only 21 minutes to travel from Uijeongbu Station to Gangnam Samseong Station. Also, it will take 27 minutes from Samseong Station to Suwon Station. This will open a dream metropolitan transportation network where it takes less than 30 minutes from northern metropolitan areas such as Uijeongbu and Yangju to downtown Seoul, and within an hour to southern metropolitan areas including Gwacheon, Anyang, Gunpo, Uiwang, Suwon, and Ansan."
He added, "We will extend the GTX-C line to Dongducheon, Hwaseong, Osan, Pyeongtaek, and Cheonan-Asan. We will simultaneously open the main section and the extension section in 2028 and push forward swiftly to provide more convenient transportation to more citizens."
President Yoon explained the economic effects such as business opportunities, regional economic revitalization, and job creation resulting from the GTX lines, stating, "We will build a dense infrastructure so that no one, regardless of where they live, suffers from transportation disparities."
Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, at a separate 'Public Discussion on Livelihood with the People,' President Yoon revealed plans for the rapid promotion of extending GTX-A, B, and C lines, establishing D, E, and F lines, and introducing metropolitan wide express railroads like GTX to large regional cities.
