Yoon and Han's 'Half Reconciliation'... Sparks Remain in 'Kim Yeo-sa, Kim Kyung-yul, and Public Sentiment'
Shift to Reconciliation Mood Six Days After Head-On Collision
Presidential Office: "Shows Willingness to Resolve Conflict"
The conflict between President Yoon Suk-yeol and Han Dong-hoon, the Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, entered a phase of calm after six days. As both the party and the presidential office reached a consensus on early conflict resolution, the direct confrontation between the two sides dramatically shifted to a mood of reconciliation through a dramatic meeting yesterday. However, differences in views surrounding the core issues?First Lady Kim Geon-hee's 'luxury handbag acceptance' controversy and the status of Emergency Response Committee member Kim Kyung-yul?remain unresolved, leading to criticism that this is a 'half-hearted reconciliation.' On the surface, the conflict appears to be settled, but since the key issues remain unresolved, there is analysis that the spark of conflict could reignite at any time.
On the 24th, a presidential office official told Asia Economy in a phone interview that the sudden meeting between President Yoon and Chairman Han the previous day was due to "a shared understanding that the conflict should not be prolonged considering the difficult livelihood issues," and that "it showed a willingness to resolve the conflict."
President Yoon visited the specialized market in Seocheon, Chungnam, where about 220 stores were destroyed by fire the day before. Chairman Han, who arrived first at the fire scene, greeted President Yoon with a bow close to 90 degrees. After shaking hands, President Yoon tapped Chairman Han on the shoulder to express friendliness. After inspecting the large fire site at Seocheon Market with Chairman Han, President Yoon traveled back to Seoul on the presidential train from Iksan Station in Jeonbuk, accompanied by ministers, lawmakers, and presidential office aides. It is reported that President Yoon and Chairman Han, who shared the same train car, exchanged discussions on livelihood support for nearly two hours.
The presidential office positively evaluated the fact that President Yoon visited the fire site, which was not on his official external schedule, and that the meeting with Chairman Han was suddenly arranged there, creating a mood of reconciliation. The cold atmosphere, which had escalated into a strong confrontation with Chairman Han completely rejecting the presidential office's resignation demands, has calmed, creating room for relationship improvement. Within the ruling party, there is also a sense of relief that the urgent issue has been extinguished.
However, the spark remains as the biggest future obstacle still exists. First, the controversy over First Lady Kim's acceptance of luxury handbags. It has not been disclosed whether the issue of First Lady Kim was discussed during the train ride shared by President Yoon and Chairman Han the day before. Since the core of the conflict was the response to the First Lady Kim controversy and there is a significant difference in positions between the president and Chairman Han, if the two sides do not coordinate their stance on how to handle the First Lady Kim issue, the conflict could recur.
President Yoon maintains the position that the controversy is a 'hidden camera plot' with political motives ahead of the April general election and that First Lady Kim is the victim. He finds Chairman Han's remarks emphasizing the 'public's expectations' uncomfortable. Regarding this, a presidential office official said, "The opposition will continue to use the (First Lady Kim controversy) as an election attack material," and "We are keeping all options open and reviewing various ways to resolve the issue."
Second, the controversy over the resignation of Emergency Response Committee member Kim Kyung-yul. On the morning of the previous day, pro-Yoon lawmaker Lee Yong attempted to hold a press conference raising issues about the operation of Han Dong-hoon's emergency committee but canceled it. Kim Kyung-yul, at the center of the conflict, posted a clarification on his Facebook that his 'Marie Antoinette' remark was not referring to First Lady Kim, but deleted the post after concerns arose that the remark being repeatedly mentioned was not good.
On the day, Chairman Han dismissed claims that Kim's resignation could be an exit strategy for the 'Yoon-Han conflict' during his arrival at the National Assembly, saying, "I have not heard such talk." Regarding the First Lady Kim risk, he said, "I have already expressed my thoughts sufficiently," and "I will not say more about what I have said so far," avoiding further comment. Chairman Han's remarks indicate that the two key issues that triggered the conflict still have unresolved differences in position.
Third, how public sentiment reacts to the Yoon-Han conflict. The opposition party has launched fierce criticism, saying that the disaster fire site was used as a backdrop for reconciliation. With about 70 days left until the general election, there is concern that this could create a misunderstanding that the election takes precedence over livelihood issues. On the day, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized, "It is inexcusable to have staged a kind of political show using the desperate victims as a backdrop, no matter how much one tries to justify it."

In response, a presidential office official said, "President Yoon visited the fire site and, guided by Chungnam Governor Kim Tae-heum, met with representatives of the affected merchants on the first floor of the shopping building, listened to their difficulties caused by the fire and their requests to the government, and instructed relevant ministers on-site to immediately consider declaring a special disaster area," adding, "Some claims appear to be mere nitpicking."
