"Biden Trails Trump by 11%P in Multilateral Contest"
As a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump becomes likely in the upcoming U.S. presidential election this November, the gap in their approval ratings is widening. A poll also showed that in a multi-candidate race, President Biden could trail former President Trump by double digits.
According to the Harvard University Center for American Political Studies (CAPS) and polling firm Harris on the 23rd (local time), President Biden secured 41% support in a hypothetical one-on-one matchup against former President Trump. Former President Trump was recorded at a higher 48%. Additionally, in a hypothetical one-on-one race against Republican primary candidate and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley (41%), President Biden trailed by 3 percentage points, garnering only 38%.
In a three-way race including President Biden, former President Trump, and independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Biden's support was only 33%. Former President Trump had 41%, and Kennedy Jr. had 18%. This means the gap between the two former and current presidents widened to 8 percentage points. Notably, when Green Party candidate Jill Stein (2%) and independent Cornell West (3%) also joined alongside Biden (33%), Trump (44%), and Kennedy Jr. (18%), the support gap between the two former and current presidents expanded to 11 percentage points.

In this survey, 55% of respondents said they would consider supporting a centrist third-party candidate if a rematch between President Biden and former President Trump occurs. 64% believed that options other than President Biden and former President Trump are necessary. Additionally, 51%, roughly one in two, expressed concerns about the health of the elderly President Biden. This survey was conducted from the 17th to 18th among 2,346 registered voters.
The Rasmussen Report's survey of 968 voters conducted from the 7th to 9th also showed a wider gap in support between President Biden and former President Trump. In a one-on-one matchup, President Biden's support was 41%, trailing former President Trump at 49%. However, an Ipsos poll earlier this month showed that in a three-way race among President Biden (34%), former President Trump (33%), and Kennedy Jr. (17%), President Biden held a slight lead. Until now, local assessments have suggested that the emergence of a third candidate would disadvantage President Biden.
