As of 6 a.m., the Gochang area recorded an average snowfall of 4.3 cm (with Seongnae-myeon reaching a maximum of 11.4 cm), and a heavy snow warning has been in effect since 6:20 a.m. that day.
The county immediately activated the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and entered an emergency duty system.
To clear roads and manage the situation, 46 personnel were deployed, and 250 tons of deicing agents such as calcium chloride, along with 37 pieces of equipment including dump trucks, sand spreaders, and graders, were mobilized to conduct snow removal on 34 routes covering 327 km, including main roads, slopes, bridges, and icy areas.
In the towns and townships, resident snow removal volunteer groups attached shovel blades to 15 one-ton trucks and 207 tractors to clear side roads and village lanes.
Additionally, 29 sanitation workers in Gochang-eup assisted pedestrian traffic by using blowers for sidewalk snow removal.
In particular, the "sidewalk snow removal machine" was put into operation for the first time to ensure safe commuting and school routes.
Governor Sim Deok-seop said, "Snow accumulated on sidewalks can become icy paths in cold weather, posing a significant threat to residents' safety, so prioritize snow removal on slopes and areas frequently used by workers and students."
He added, "Please make every effort to ensure thorough snow removal to prevent additional difficulties caused by heavy snowfall, and since more snow is forecasted, I ask all residents and public officials to participate in clearing snow in front of their homes."
Furthermore, he urged, "As strong winds are expected until the end of the week, causing wind chill temperatures around minus 10 degrees Celsius, please take thorough measures to prevent damage to agricultural facilities such as vinyl greenhouses and protect vulnerable groups."
The county deployed public officials from the county office from the morning after the skies cleared to conduct snow removal in vulnerable urban areas to ensure pedestrian safety and prevent traffic accidents.
