Yoon Orders to Explore Price Reduction Measures Even Before the Abolition of the Dantong Law

Ordered Thorough Preparation for Neulbom School to Be Held This Year

President Yoon Suk-yeol instructed his aides on the 22nd to "devise measures to ensure that mobile device prices are effectively lowered through the activation of marketing competition among service providers, even before the abolition of the Act on the Improvement of Distribution Structure of Mobile Communication Terminals (DanTongBeop)."

On the same day, President Yoon presided over a senior secretaries' meeting at the Yongsan Presidential Office and ordered improvement measures related to DanTongBeop, according to a written briefing by Kim Soo-kyung, spokesperson for the Presidential Office.

DanTongBeop was enacted in 2014 with the aim of promoting competition in services and fees, but it has been criticized for ultimately benefiting only the telecommunications companies.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination also announced at a public discussion on livelihood issues held that morning that it intends to abolish DanTongBeop.

Additionally, thorough preparation and broad opinion gathering were requested regarding Neulbom School, which will be implemented starting this year. Neulbom School is scheduled to begin with 2,000 elementary schools in the first semester and expand to 6,100 schools in the second semester, eventually being conducted in all elementary schools nationwide.

President Yoon said, "Prepare thoroughly for the full implementation of Neulbom School, including program development and the recruitment of dedicated personnel," and instructed, "Prepare to hold a public discussion on livelihood issues soon with Neulbom School as the topic to widely listen to the opinions and wishes of parents."

He also ordered thorough preparations against the cold wave. President Yoon said, "Starting tomorrow, temperatures will drop sharply and the cold wave will begin, so ensure complete safety and care, including heating for vulnerable groups."

He added, "Please pay special attention to ensure that the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games are not disrupted by the cold wave and heavy snowfall."
