Company Temporarily Suspends Service... "Update Error"
An artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot responsible for handling customer inquiries at a British delivery company ended up badmouthing the company. In response, the company temporarily suspended the AI customer service.
On the 20th (local time), British daily The Guardian and others reported an incident involving musician Ashley Bouchard (30), who was consulting with the AI chatbot at the delivery company DPD's customer center. When Bouchard's package was lost, she inquired with the chatbot but did not receive a proper response. Frustrated, she playfully challenged the chatbot to "badmouth the company."
At first, the chatbot showed no particular reaction, but as Bouchard persisted, it responded with profanity including the word "Fuck," saying, "I will do my best if I can be of help."
When Bouchard asked, "Please recommend a better delivery company than DPD," the chatbot replied by criticizing the company, saying, "DPD is the slowest and most unreliable worst delivery company in the world," and "Their customer service is terrible."

Bouchard posted the conversation with the chatbot on her social media, writing, "The chatbot was useless for inquiries about lost packages but was happy to respond to criticism of their company." The post went viral, garnering over 1.5 million views within two days.
Through The Guardian, Bouchard pointed out, "These kinds of chatbots are created to improve our lives, but if not properly implemented, they can provide users with a more disappointing and inhumane experience."
Meanwhile, DPD explained, "We have been effectively using AI functions in chat consultations for several years," adding, "The issue occurred during a system update process the day before." They stated that the AI function has been temporarily suspended and that a new update is currently underway. Regarding Bouchard's lost package, they said, "We have contacted her and are working to resolve the issue."
