‘Daejeo Bridge Construction Project’ Passes Environmental Impact Assessment ... Project Promotion Accelerates
Passage through Nakdonggang Basin Environmental Office on 17th - Consultation with Cultural Heritage Administration - Construction to Start in June
Expected to Play a Key Role as Important Infrastructure for Balanced Development of Western Busan Ar
Busan City announced on the 17th that the environmental impact assessment for the ‘Sikman~Sasang (Daejeo Bridge) Road Construction Project’ has been approved, accelerating the progress of the project.
Daejeo Bridge is a Nakdong River crossing bridge connecting Sikman-dong in Gangseo-gu to Samnak-dong in Sasang-gu’s Sasang Industrial Complex. It is one of the major arterial roads aimed at promoting Busan’s continuous development and balanced growth between the eastern and western parts of Busan.
This project secured feasibility in April 2010 through a preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and finalized the road route in 2016 through a strategic environmental impact assessment by the Ministry of Environment (Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office). However, the project had been stalled for seven years due to controversies over damage to migratory bird habitats.
To expedite the project, the city gathered opinions from residents and experts and decided to proceed with the original route while preparing an environmental impact assessment report (final version) that includes measures to mitigate environmental impacts, such as guaranteeing winter migratory bird activities and expanding habitats. After applying for consultation on September 20 of last year and undergoing review by specialized agencies, the city received final approval from the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office on the 17th.
The approval of the environmental impact assessment for the Daejeo Bridge construction project reflects the city’s balanced administration that pursues both development and conservation, including directly promoting restoration projects in the Nakdong River estuary area. In the case of the Daejeo Bridge project, the city believes this approval is a result of its commitment to faithfully implement habitat creation and management plans to minimize environmental impacts.
After passing the environmental impact assessment, the city plans to proceed with the construction of the Daejeo Bridge project in June this year, following the remaining consultation procedures with the Cultural Heritage Administration regarding changes to cultural heritage sites.
