Incheon Yeonsu-gu Strengthens Crackdown on Uninsured Vehicle Mandatory Insurance... 8,237 Fines Issued Last Year
On the 17th, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon announced that it will launch a large-scale campaign to minimize residents' damages caused by driving without mandatory automobile insurance, along with crackdowns on uninsured vehicles.
If a vehicle is caught being driven without mandatory automobile insurance, the first offense results in a fine and the case is closed, but from the second offense onward, it becomes subject to criminal punishment, with imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million KRW.
Mandatory automobile insurance incurs a penalty if not subscribed to even for a single day, and driving an uninsured vehicle risks becoming a criminal even if no accident occurs, so caution is necessary.

Last year, among the vehicles registered in Yeonsu-gu, 8,237 cases were fined for not having mandatory insurance, accounting for 3% of the registered vehicles in Yeonsu-gu. Among these uninsured vehicles caught driving, 630 cases were subject to fines or criminal punishment, of which 440 cases were handled through investigations by Yeonsu-gu special judicial police officers.
Yeonsu-gu expects the number of uninsured vehicles to increase further due to continuous population inflow, an increase in registered vehicles, and the economic downturn. Therefore, it plans to encourage insurance subscription by producing flyers, displaying messages on government office electronic billboards, and installing banners in areas with high foot traffic.
