On the 15th (local time), CNN and other foreign media reported that Madison Marsh (22), representing Miss Colorado, won the 2024 Miss America pageant held on the 14th at the Walt Disney Theater in Orlando, Florida. CNN reported that when her name was announced as the winner among 50 contestants, Marsh let out a joyful cheer as if she could hardly believe it.
Marsh attracted local media attention during the competition due to her unique background. She is the first active-duty Air Force officer to compete in the Miss America pageant. She currently serves as a training officer at the U.S. Air Force Academy, holding the rank of lieutenant. It is reported that Marsh entered the Air Force Academy in El Paso County, Colorado, four years ago with dreams of becoming a pilot and astronaut. With the school's permission during her studies, she participated in the beauty pageant, was selected as Miss Colorado, and went on to compete in the Miss America pageant.
In a previous interview with the media, Marsh said, "It was nice to talk about serving in the military as a pilot with other young girls," adding, "I saw the pageant as an opportunity to break stereotypes about women in the military." She also expressed her ambition, saying, "I may not be good at dancing or singing, but I want to captivate the audience by making them feel like they are in the cockpit with me."
Ultimately, she became the first active-duty U.S. military officer to win the Miss America pageant.

However, Marsh does not appear to plan to continue her military career after graduating from the academy. She stated, "At this point, I am most likely to pursue cancer research," explaining, "I became interested after my mother, who suffered from pancreatic cancer, passed away." She added, "As graduation from the academy approached, I realized I was more interested in policy-making and cancer research. That is why I went to the Kennedy School." It is known that while attending the academy, Marsh earned a master's degree at Harvard Kennedy School's public policy graduate program through a special partnership program with the Air Force.
