Songpa-gu Leads Food Waste Reduction by Installing RFID Weighing Devices in Apartments
Installation of RFID Weighing Devices and Support Grants at 12 Award Complexes, Presentation of Certification Plaques
Approximately 3.8% Reduction per Household Compared to Previous Year (Total 1,900 Tons), Cost Savings of 470 Million KRW in Disposal Fees
Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it held the ‘2023 Apartment Food Waste Reduction Competition’ last December, selecting a total of 12 apartment complexes and supporting the installation of 20 RFID waste meters.
To encourage voluntary efforts from residents, the district holds the food waste reduction competition annually. This year, based on evaluation criteria such as food waste reduction rate, average waste output per household, RFID equipment management performance, and self-promotion achievements, 12 apartments were selected from 36 participating complexes.
A district official stated, “The 36 apartment complexes that participated in the competition achieved about a 3.8% reduction per household compared to the previous year, reducing a total of approximately 1,900 tons of waste. This translates to a cost saving of 470 million KRW,” highlighting the significant impact of the competition.
In particular, the 2023 competition introduced unprecedented incentives such as support for RFID waste meter installation, which was not available the previous year. Up to three RFID meters per winning complex are supported, with installation subsidies of up to 1.5 million KRW provided. Early guidance on these incentives garnered strong participation from residents.
In fact, a representative from the Jamsil Jugong 5 Complex Apartment Residents’ Association, selected as the ‘Best’ complex and receiving maximum support, said, “This was the result of active participation and cooperation from both residents and the management office,” adding, “All apartment residents will work together to ensure that residents leading food waste reduction efforts receive various benefits.”
Meanwhile, the district has been recognized both domestically and internationally for its efforts toward carbon neutrality, receiving the Prime Minister’s Award as the nationwide first place in last year’s ‘Local Government Food Waste Management Performance Evaluation.’
