Jang Miran: "I Hope Youth Athletes Learn the Values of Solidarity and Empathy"
Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games South Korean Team Send-off Ceremony
'Safe, Comfortable, and Enjoyable Games' Promise
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee will hold the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games Korea Team Send-off Ceremony on the afternoon of the 9th at the Seoul Olympic Parktel. About 150 people, including Jang Mi-ran, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Lee Ki-heung, the president of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, presidents of city and provincial sports councils, executives of sports organizations by discipline, coaches, and athletes, will attend to wish for their success.
This is the first Winter Youth Olympic Games held in Asia. It is even more meaningful as it utilizes the venues from the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The event will be held from the 19th of this month to the 1st of next month in Gangneung, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, and Hoengseong in Gangwon Province. Approximately 2,950 athletes from about eighty countries will participate. Since the participants are youth (born between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2009), the event has a strong character as a sports festival for gathering and exchanging rather than competing for medals. No country rankings will be calculated.
Our team is composed of 153 members, the largest ever in the history of the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Medals are expected in traditionally strong sports such as speed skating, as well as in snowboarding and skeleton, which have recently shown excellent performance. Shin Ji-a, the next-generation star of Korean women's figure skating, and Choi Ga-on, regarded as a "genius snowboarder," will also participate and showcase their top-level skills.
