Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Selected for Eco-Friendly Hydrogen Cleaning Vehicle Pilot Project
Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 5th that it has been selected for the Ministry of Environment's 2024 Eco-friendly Hydrogen Cleaning Vehicle Pilot Project and secured the entire project budget of 2.7 billion KRW through national and city funds.
The eco-friendly hydrogen cleaning vehicle costs 900 million KRW, which is six times more expensive than conventional diesel vehicles, but it has the advantage of producing almost no noise and vibration during operation.
It is expected to improve the working environment for cleaning workers, enhance the efficiency of household waste collection, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector.
The district plans to acquire three hydrogen cleaning vehicles within this year and operate them as dedicated vehicles for collecting volume-based waste bags in apartment complexes in relatively newly developed residential areas such as Suwan District and Seonun District.
Currently, there are 21 volume-based waste bag collection vehicles operating in Gwangsan, and with the introduction of hydrogen cleaning vehicles, it is expected that not only collection efficiency but also the effect of increasing the number of vehicles will help resolve citizens' inconveniences related to household waste collection.
In this regard, complaints about household waste collection in Gwangsan-gu increased by about 30% compared to the previous year in 2023, with particularly high citizen demand for improvements in volume-based waste bag collection.

In May last year, the district was selected for the "2023 Science and Technology Utilization Resident-Consensus Regional Problem Solving Project," a collaborative project between the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and is promoting a data-based household waste collection and transportation innovation project together with Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology.
