Seoul National University of Education Fails to Fill 80.5% of Quota, Rolls Over
Korea University Medical School Also Faces Unexpected 8 No-Shows
At education universities, where popularity had been declining due to increasing infringements on teachers' rights, the number of unfilled spots in the 2024 academic year early admissions surged sharply. Nationwide, 33 unfilled spots were also reported across 39 medical schools.
According to Jongno Academy's "2024 Nationwide University Early Admission Unfilled Status" released on the 4th, a total of 37,332 students from 221 universities nationwide failed to fill their early admission quotas and were deferred to regular admissions. This accounts for 14% of the total early admission quota. The number of universities that filled less than 60% of their quotas nearly doubled from last year, reaching 15 schools.
On the afternoon of the 14th of last month, students and parents attending the JinHakSa regular admission strategy briefing held at Jamsil Student Gymnasium in Songpa-gu, Seoul, are listening to explanations about admission application strategies.

Notably, education universities showed a decline. Among the top 20 schools with the highest early admission unfilled rates nationwide, four were education universities. Last year, there were no education universities in this category.
The early admission unfilled rate for 13 education universities nationwide (including elementary education departments) was recorded at 31% (750 students). By university, Seoul National University of Education had 149 unfilled spots, accounting for 80.5% of its admission quota. This was followed by ▲Jinju National University of Education at 72.1% (150 students) ▲Jeonju National University of Education at 63.8% (81 students) ▲Chuncheon National University of Education at 60.8% (118 students).
In the 2023 academic year early admissions held last year, 20.6% (507 students) of the total quota (2,467 students) were not filled, but this year the unfilled rate jumped by about 10 percentage points in just one year.
Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, stated, "The avoidance of education universities is at a very serious level," adding, "When students are admitted to both general universities and education universities simultaneously, the tendency to choose general universities over education universities is clearly evident."
