At around 10:27 a.m. that day, after inspecting the site of the new airport on Gadeokdo Island in Busan, Lee was answering questions from the press when an unidentified man attacked him with a weapon to the left side of his neck, causing him to collapse.
The man reportedly approached Lee, asking for an autograph as if he were a supporter, then assaulted him with the weapon he was carrying. The police arrested the man who attacked Lee at the scene.
