Gyeonggi-do Strengthens 'Connectivity' in City and County Urban Planning Establishment
Gyeonggi Province will implement the ‘Gyeonggi Province Urban and County Basic Plan Spatial Structure Establishment Standards’ starting this year. The urban and county basic plan is a comprehensive plan that presents the spatial structure and long-term development direction of a city or county.
Currently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has prepared guidelines for establishing urban and county basic plans, but since the detailed regulations are not specific, many problems have arisen. As a result, each city and county develops urban plans independently without considering the spatial structure of adjacent cities and counties, leading to a lack of connectivity across Gyeonggi Province as a whole, which has been repeatedly pointed out during the review by the Gyeonggi Province Urban Planning Committee.
In response, Gyeonggi Province prepared the ‘Gyeonggi Province Urban and County Basic Plan Spatial Structure Establishment Standards’ (draft) through a policy task conducted internally from March to September last year.
Subsequently, the standards were finalized after collecting opinions from cities and counties in October and November, and undergoing advisory procedures with the Gyeonggi Province Urban Planning Committee in December.
The newly established standards include ▲ basic directions for spatial structure reorganization ▲ spatial structure setting and central place system ▲ development axis and conservation axis concepts and spatial structure alternative setting ▲ methods for drawing spatial structure conceptual maps.

A Gyeonggi Province official stated, "As the metropolitan transportation network develops, the linkage of spatial structures among cities and counties within Gyeonggi Province becomes increasingly important," and added, "We hope that the operation of these establishment standards will realize a systematic and well-organized metropolitan spatial structure."
